About Allahabad City

ashokaAllahabad city, one time capital city of the state of Uttar Pradesh in India has great historical background and a rich heritage as well. It was named Allahabad by the great Mughal Emporer in 1575. A stone-pillar dating the regime the Great Ashoka paves-way to authenticate the ancient origin of this city. This city also has a sacred and pious status from Hindu mythological aspect. The Hindu called it by the name of ‘Prayag’.

sangamA very rare geographical feature also makes this city a unique one as the two great Indian rivers Ganges and Yamuna meet here at place called “Sangam”. The confluence of the two rivers ‘Sangam’ is considered to have a great soul-cleansing power and all the Hindu wish to bath here atleast once in their life-time.

A ‘Fort’ built by Akbar-e-Azam in 1583 at the bank of the river Yamuna is a Master-piece of Mughal architect. It is still standing with all grace and grandeur.

khusruKhusru Bagh is another master-piece of Mughalia Architect built within the city. The planning and lay-out of this red-stone building is marvellous and worth seeing. This garden contains the tomb of Prince Khusru, son of King Jehangir.

A very less known fact relates to the importance of this city that virtually the control of India was handed-over to British Government at this place after in mutiny 1858.

This city also remained a hub of the activities of Indian National Congress. The first Prime Minister of India Jawahar Lal Nehru belong to this city and later-on his predecessors Indira Gandhi, Lal Bahadur Shastri and Rajiv Gandhi were the prime personalities bonded with this city.

It was this city when in the year 1930 an All India Muslim League convention was held here and topnotch people leaders of Muslim League participated and Allama Iqbal put up the concept of “Pakistan” for the first time.

alluniIt will be a biased description of this city if the cultural and educational heritage is not brought to book. History records that the city has produced great scholars, poets , politicians and thinkers. This happened only because of a well established University of Allahabad, which has so many faculties like Engineering, Medical, Law, Commerce, Arts and Science. This university was established in the year 1914.
